ah ha!

Today it is colder in Austin than in New York, and for some sick twisted reason, that makes me happy.

Of course that all changes this weekend.

Damn you elliptical earth, damn you!!

Colin Powell and George Bush are related.

Weird, right?

But do you know which relative they share?

Kind Edward I. Otherwise known as "Longshanks". He was the one that tried to slaughter all the Irish. When that didn't work, he went after he Scots (the people, not my family). When that didn't work, he passed a law in Scotland which said that on a couple's wedding night, the local British Lord would get to have sex with the bride before the husband. He was trying to breed them out.

This is the same guy who threw his own son out of the castle window because he was gay. He threw his lover out too.

Wow. Our President and Secretary of State are royalty.

Now I see where they get their foreign policy ideas.

badum-bum.

Lost in Translation is the best movie I have seen in a long, long time.

I have always loved Bill Murray, but this guy has turned such a corner in the last few years. The performance he gives here was inspirational, to say the least. There is something about truly funny people that can make them great actors. I think it is the fearlessness. Funny people also tend to show you that part of themselves no one else will. Or at least a version of it.

I look at guys like Bill Murray or Robin Williams and I just weep.

And Sofia Coppola has directed this movie with no regard for the rules. We are drawn into this story not by hearing their secrets, but by sharing their world. We empathize with them for the right reasons; not because of a sappy soundtrack or hearing them confess their fears, but because Coppola has created this world were you can't help but understand what these two people are feeling.

The film is a masterpiece, and that it got pigeonholed as a 'comedy' at the Golden Globes is a crime.

I think the Oscars suck anyway, and if you want to know why, just ask. But I sure hope this movie sweeps up some gold.

Bill Murray. Who knew that the star of my favorite movie when I was 8 (Meatballs), 10 (Stripes), 13 (Ghostbusters), 22 (Groundhog Day), 27 (Rushmore) and 32 (Lost in Translation) would be the same guy.

You throw in films like Caddyshack, Mad Dog and Glory (where he upstages DeNiro), The Royal Tenenbaums, Scrooged (the best version of our generation), and What About Bob (proving Bill can still be Bill) and you have one of the best actors of our time.

Move over Al and Bobby. Billy's got chops.

Seriously.

Holy Crap! I've been nowhere!

Below is a map with all the states I have been to in Red:

create your own visited states map
or write about it on the open travel guide

I have only been to half of the states in this country. What is that? I'm one of those people now?

Never have I tasted cheese fresh from the Wisconsin soil or sunk my teeth into a delicious potato pulled right off the Idaho vine.

But I have seen spam sculpted for your artistic pleasure and been a few feet away from molten lava as it flowed towards the sea. I've stood on the dunes of White Sands and spoken with the desert. I have served lasagna to a billionare (two, if you count Michael Dell). I have heard the sound of one hand clapping. I can even produce it. I have walked in the presidential colonnade.

But I still haven't been to Alabama.

Damn!
